Meet Lisbon’s Art Star Natalia Gromicho
Lisbon-based expressionist painter Natália Gromicho is one of Portugal’s best known artists. She is an internationally recognized artist whose work is often concerned with perception and reality. She is known for creating paintings that are as energetic as the streets of Lisbon itself, and it is easy to see the personal influence of this bright, chaotic city within her artwork. From her painted lines scrawled over deserted pastel buildings, to her famous faceless figures – the artist captures something intense and poetic. Her work is the essence of the creative vibe in Lisbon.
The reoccurring image of a headless and armless female mannequin verges on the surreal, and within this metaphysical framework Gromicho paints with an ‘anything-might-happen’ wildness. Her paintings are slowly piecing together a philosophical mosaic. As the demand for her work increases, her unique vision becomes more clear. She is the winner of numerous art contests and told us of her favorite, Best Rolling Stone Alternative Logo for a major Portuguese radio commercial in 1999, where she won a trip to London to meet the Rolling Stones during their Bridges to Babylon Tour in Wembley.
Gromicho’s career spans more than two decades. She studied at the Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa, and also graduated from the prestigious painting program at the private ArCo School of Art in Lisbon. Having participated in more than 50 solo and group exhibitions, the artist has represented her country well, showcasing art in Italy, Brazil, New York, Miami, London, Australia and more. Her works are held in private and institutional collections worldwide.
In 2013 Gromicho founded her own art gallery in Downtown Chiado called Meeting Art Gallery located in Lisbon, Portugal. Meeting Art Gallery mixes the traditional atelier with an open gallery space hosting exhibits, events, art performances and live painting. “The idea is simple, make a private space in an open space, without limitation to any type of audience, without obstacles, without barriers. Anyone can see, taste, touch, paint.” says Gromicho. Meeting Art Gallery is the organizer and host of the respected Lisbon International Contemporary Exhibition (LICE), which is taking place October 4-18, 2014.
