Miami-based artist Rosee Camafreita’s Menacing Abstractions
The much anticipated work of Miami-based artist Rosee Camafreita is on display at McCormick Place Art Gallery in the heart of downtown, Miami. The piece shown below is titled ‘The Indian’, c.2o12 – it’s part of Camafreita’s Menacing Abstractions Series, which explores perception and transforming images through photography, natural and artificial light, textures and an array of objects to create visually engaging images that garner phantasmagorical effects. Applying tricks of the hand, the artist manipulates objects, revealing dark and mysterious forms which she labels as menacing.
Camafreita creates strong and dramatic images by using photography as a tool for experimentation making use of sheets of fabric, light and color to produce modern and abstract images which she then re-invents with acrylic paints. The artist aims to express the essence of her photographs in order to capture their power on a canvas.
