Art Week in Miami 2014
The favorite winter meeting place for the international art world Art Basel Miami Beach will take place December 4-7, 2014. Entering it’s 13th Edition, at the nexus of North America and Latin America, Art Basel Miami Beach presents artwork from across the globe. Over 250 of the world’s leading galleries participate, drawing over 70,000 visitors each year. With miles of sandy beaches dotted with classic Art Deco architecture, world-class art museums, and a glittering nightlife, Miami Beach ranks among America’s most iconic cities. During Art Basel, it embraces the art world with special exhibitions at museums and galleries across the city, transforming the week into a dense and dynamic cultural event.
This magnificent annual event has become known as Art Week in Miami. It’s been said that if you’re not here during ABMB then you don’t matter in the art world. There are swarms of satellite art fairs and parties that envelope the entire city. The non-stop activity takes place from Wynwood, the Design District, MiMo, Brickell, Downtown, Midtown, North Beach and South Beach. It is the largest convergence of people from the international art world who descend upon a single location for a spectacular week of cutting edge art and sublime parties. Be careful not to blink twice, because it’ll be gone. Plan on spending at least four days enjoying the scene. There’s a lot taking place, not just at the art fairs, but also at local art museums, private collections, non-profit art organizations, galleries and artist studios.
When Art Basel comes to town, it generates much more than just revenue, it instills a sense of Miami’s presence on the world stage as a destination of luxury and lifestyle. According to George Neary, Director of Cultural Tourism for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, “The way people look at Miami today has changed dramatically due to Art Basel. It has given people the sense that Miami is on the world stage. Now we have five-star hotels that we didn’t have. We have people moving here from all over the world. It’s really had a long-term effect on the community.” Art Basel was launched in Miami Beach in 2002, transforming South Florida into a cultural mecca of unmatched art, design, entertainment, excitement and raw creation. The annual four-day contemporary art exhibition has remained largely unchanged since its launch, drawing art collectors, luxury brands and celebrities from every corner of the world.
