Artist Florencia Clement de Grandprey’s ‘Guardians of Sacred Spaces’

South Florida-based artist and designer Florencia Clement de Grandprey paints on rugs! She is known for her figurative and mixed media masterpieces on area rugs and tapestries, ranging between 4′ x 6′, and upwards of 10 feet. Her series ‘Guardians of Sacred Spaces‘, is comprised of powerful portraits that command attention, while infusing a sense of protection and calm to the space they are in.

Florencia is continuously exploring new painting surfaces and materials. We asked how she conceived of her uncommon “wall hangings”, and she said, “I discovered I could paint directly on upholstery fabric and area rugs and have fallen in love with the effect I’m able to achieve in this new medium. The patterns become intertwined with the image and add yet another dimension to it.”

Her inspiration and style comes from many sources. “I’m the daughter of an American mother and a French/Italian father and was born and raised in Spain, a country blessed with amazing artists and rich culture, lively colors, mesmerizing patterns and lots of passion. I combine my love of the classic masters with contemporary design flair. I paint to celebrate us as imperfectly perfect beings by bringing out our strengths and our beauty, and to use it as a reminder of who we really are, to say ‘I see you and honor you‘,” explained the artist.

Florencia’s work brings together mixed media and figurative art. She combines painting on fabric and wallpaper patterns, or simply uses a fabric as the starting point for painting and paints directly on it. When possible, she recycles materials that would otherwise be disposed of and turns it into art by incorporating it into her pieces.
