AIRIE: ‘Sundays in the Park’ featuring Laura Gibson
February 26, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Sunday, February 26th from 2-4pm enjoy Sundays in the Park featuring Laura Gibson presented by AIRIE, Artists in Residence in Everglades. This season, AIRIE presents three opportunities to meet resident artists at the Ernest F. Coe Visitors Center this winter while introducing Getting the Water Right, an exhibition at site specific locations throughout the Everglades National Park. These events will entertain and educate audiences about certain aspects and historical moments that led to the creation of the Park. The presentations will share stories of the water, wildlife and landscape that have been affected by the agriculture and real estate development that encroach upon the watershed through visual arts, dance and music. Next up, a painting workshop at Shark Valley with Magnus Sodamin.
Feb.26th Sundays in the Park:
2pm – Getting the Water Right – Meet us in the Ernest F. Coe Visitors Center Presenatation room for a quick informal tour of this photographic and ethnographic exhibition focused on the culture and politics of water in the Everglades. A collaboration between internationally acclaimed photographer Adam Nadel and UCLA anthropologist Jessica Cattelino, works are at 6 locations throughout the Park. Each installation visually and textually explores the interplay of ecological, social, and cultural processes in one of the world’s most iconic and imperiled wetlands ecosystems. Supported by Florida Humanities Council.
2:15pm – Everglades Foundation biologist Stephen Davis and LTER’s education and outreach coordinator Nick Oehm from FIU will lead a discussion in the presentation room about water.
3pm – Join Laura Gibson on the back porch, for songs that seemed married to the sublime scenery of Taylor Slough. Gibson became known for her Tiny Desk segment on NPR, and recently toured Japan and Europe with new compositions. Supported by Miami-Dade County Dept. of Cultural Affairs.
