Documentary: ‘Liberty in a Soup’ Premiere at Little Haiti Cultural Center
October 9, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Sunday, October 9th from 6-9pm join us for the premiere of Liberty In A Soup, a feature documentary that follows the journey of a young filmmaker, Dudley Alexis, through Haiti as he examines the symbolic meaning of of a traditional New Years Eve event – the making of a pumpkin based soup known as ‘SOUP JOUMOU’.
The preparation of the Soup is a symbol of freedom for the Haitian people. The multi-layered soup is reminiscent of the complex challenges and intense polarization that characterized pre-Haiti and its ensuing victory led by Toussaint L’Ouverture. Narrated by Film Maker/Producer Alexis the film weaves an intricate but spell-binding look at the Haitian Revolution, its culture and tradition of a proud and victorious nation. It includes expert interviews and conversations with leading scholars and thinkers versed in Haitian studies. Liberty in A Soup challenges the negative stereotype of a nation that should stand valiant and proud in history. Free event at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex, RSVP here. Check out the trailer –> YouTube.
