An original on-canvas painting titled MAMBA ON was painted live by master portrait artist Alberto Villa in the presence of Kobe, celebrities and guests of the Los Angeles Lakers at their 2013 Youth Foundation Charity Event. Kobe loved the piece so much that he signed it in a way he had never done before or after “Kobe 24 Mamba”. After that evening, MAMBA ON was securely stored for a decade and has never been seen since.

Villa’s painting became the visual image of Mamba mentality, but only because Kobe deemed it so with his words and actions. Immediately after signing MAMBA ON, Kobe put his hands on Villa’s shoulders and insisted Villa be pictured with him before the painting, galvanizing its perfect provenance for all time. Kobe was wise, so it is safe to assume he was intentional that night, knowing that this one-time Kobe 24 Mamba signature and his pictured embrace of Villa would forever be definitive factors in determining the special significance and value of MAMBA ON amongst the world’s incredible sports artifacts.

Villa recalls Kobe approaching him, saying, “So you’re the man who painted this? I love it!” Before the evening ended, Kobe put what destined MAMBA ON into motion to become one of the most intimate and vital Kobe sports artifacts of all time. Villa purposely chose the moments Kobe instantaneously transitioned into the ferocious human viper, thousands of times in his legendary career, as the theme of MAMBA ON and captured Kobe’s wild-eyed visage, explosive emotion, and extreme muscularity with edgy, perfectly sculpted bold splashes of vivid colors on canvas.

MAMBA ON is not just a piece of art or a sports artifact. It is a personal endorsement from Kobe, a symbol of his legacy and a connection to his fans. Its destiny, whether in a public space or a private collection, will only add to its significance. The future of MAMBA ON is a topic of considerable discussion. Should it be on permanent display in a public space, allowing everyone to admire it, or should it be acquired by a private collector, adding to its exclusivity? The decision will shape the legacy of this iconic piece.
